Posted October 20, 2018 07:05:08 AUSTRALIA’S biggest Internet of Everything hub could be ready by 2020, as the nation’s tech giants look to secure the next generation of IoT devices from the continent’s biggest provider.
With the opening of Amazon Prime and Microsoft’s Project Spark, Australia is set to join the ranks of the US, India, Japan, South Korea and China as a hub of the global connected world.
Ahead of the announcement, Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced plans to build a $US1.2 billion hub for the next-generation connected devices that will be built in the capital Canberra.
Mr Morrison said the hub would be Australia’s biggest infrastructure investment to date, with up to 20 million devices.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to become a hub for people to go to, that will deliver a real innovation and real opportunity for Australia to grow in the digital age,” he said.
“And it’s the biggest project we’ve ever done in our entire history.”
The hub will include a massive central processing unit that will process billions of transactions a day and allow a user to access up to 15 million devices at once.
“The idea is to build something that is more than just a data centre,” Mr Morrison said.
“It’s a hub, it’s an internet-of-things hub, and we want it to be here, in Canberra, where it can be a hub.”
We are building it for the future, we’re building it to last and we’re also building it as a service for the customer.
“The plan is to provide a massive hub that will offer everything from smartphones to cameras and refrigerators to refrigerators.”
This will be an incredible hub that has everything that you can possibly need in a single facility, not just a one-stop shop, not only a one place,” Mr Moore said.
It will be a multi-faceted hub, with a new data centre being built in Canberra and a new hub for other services being built on the Gold Coast, the Government said.
The Government has also announced that it will build a data centres and a data hubs for all its infrastructure projects in Canberra.”
There’s a massive opportunity here for Canberra and the Australian economy,” Mr Mitchell said.
